| The story of the ten lepers in the Bible Luke 17:11–19 records an account of ten men who had infectious skin diseases, commonly translated as “leprosy.” In the Israelite community, when a person discovered a rash or skin disorder, he or she had to go to the priest for examination. The priest then determined whether this was a contagious disease and whether the person was to be declared ceremonially unclean (Leviticus 13:1). Jewish law prohibited anyone with such a disease from associating with the general community. They had to be isolated and many times lived as outcasts until they died (Leviticus 13:45–46). This was necessary in order to keep infectious diseases from becoming an epidemic. But, for those afflicted, it could be a life sentence. AboutTheWord.org GotQuestions.org |

| What does it mean that Jesus saw the paralyzed man’s faith? Early in Jesus’ public ministry, He entered the town of Capernaum in the region of Galilee and taught an important lesson about faith. Many in the town gathered inside a house to hear Jesus preach. The crowd was so large that a group of friends had to lower a paralyzed man through the roof to reach Jesus. Mark writes that “when Jesus saw their faith,” He declared the man’s sins forgiven (Mark 2:5). The fact that Jesus “saw” their faith means He recognized the genuineness of it through their actions. | Are children punished for the sins of their parents? Children are not punished for the sins committed by their parents; neither are parents punished for the sins of their children. Each of us is responsible for our own sins. Ezekiel 18:20 tells us, “The soul who sins is the one who will die. The son will not share the guilt of the father, nor will the father share the guilt of the son.” This verse clearly shows that punishment for one’s sins is borne by that person. | Many Will Come After traveling through Galilee, teaching and healing the sick, Jesus arrived in Capernaum. There, a Roman centurion sought Jesus’ help for his paralyzed servant. Jesus was amazed by the centurion’s unmatched faith and told His disciples, “Truly I tell you, I have not found anyone in Israel with so great a faith. I tell you that many will come from east and west to share the banquet with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven. But the sons of the kingdom will be thrown into the outer darkness where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth” (Matthew 8:10–12, CSB). AboutTheWord.org GotQuestions.org |
