Wisdom For Today

Many people still cling to the notion that man is naturally good. We did not get this from the Greeks. Aristotle said, “There is no good in mankind.” We did not get it from Judaism. Jeremiah said, “The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked; who can know it?” (Jeremiah 17:9). We did not get it from Christian teachings. The Apostle Paul said, “All have sinned, and come short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23). We got this illusion, I believe, from the philosophers and psychologists of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries who taught the false doctrine that man is a helpless victim of his environment. The Bible says that man is not naturally good. All human experience confirms it. Man is rebellious by nature. This first rebellion in history happened in the   Garden of Eden, where the environment was perfect and there was no heredity on which to blame it!

Our society often uses the scales of political correctness to weigh the value of a person. Can we rely on their fairness, balance, and accuracy?

Political correctness is marked by words like “sensitivity” and “tolerance,” but when we place questions such as “Who am I?” and “Does my life have value?” on the scales, balance is impossible to achieve.

In spite of the fact that God created man and woman and declared them to be “very good,” political correctness refuses to identify or define gender.

The politically-correct term is “pro-choice,” but it equates to millions of babies annihilated each year in the name of a woman’s prerogative. Their blood is on the hands of those that abort the innocent.

Political correctness has tipped the scales precariously out of balance. The effort to create order for every cause has resulted in chaos. Under the guise of equality, everything is unequal. In search of tolerance, Truth has been ousted and will not be recognized.

Though it promises inclusion, those who refuse to conform to its agenda are slandered and vilified.

The scales of political correctness are not fair or faultless enough to measure the value of a human life. They rob us of our highest potential and bankrupt our future. This way that seems right to a man will surely lead to death.

Happiness doesn’t come from what you have, but from what you are. That’s why the social gospel will never work. Some well-meaning Christians think that if they could just change people’s conditions, they could somehow change their character and thus change society. That’s never going to work. Listen, I want to ask you a question: Where did mankind get into trouble in the first place? In the Garden of Eden. Where are you going to find a better environment than that? Yet Eden was where people decided to rebel against God.

Don’t buy into the idea that a better or even perfect environment is going to save the world. Better living conditions improve people’s lives in the sense of meeting their physical needs, and we should want to help people have clean water, sufficient food, clothing, and shelter. But that’s not what we’re talking about here. We’re talking about character.

This is the difference between the social gospel and the saving gospel. The saving gospel realizes you’re not going to build the knowledge of God, His character, and His principles into people by providing a nicer environment, any more than you could purify water by painting the pump handle. The Bible puts the emphasis not on what man has, not even primarily on what man does, but on what man is.

Ours is the greatest mission on the face of this earth: the salvation of lost souls. Our message is the greatest message: the glorious Gospel of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Our Master is the greatest Master, Jesus Christ Himself. The church that’s not interested in evangelism and soul-winning is not worthy of theground it occupies. We are to evangelize or we will fossilize. Our mandate is to preach the glorious Gospel of Jesus Christ to every creature.

There is a story of a woman in England who came to her vicar with a troubled conscience. The vicar knew her to be a habitual gossip—she had maligned nearly everyone in the village. “How can I make amends?” she pleaded. The vicar said, “If you want to make peace with your conscience, take a bag of goose feathers and drop one on the porch of each one you have slandered.” When she had done so, she came back to the vicar and said, “Is that all?” “No,” said the wise old minister, “you must go now and gather up every feather and bring them all back to me.” After a long time the woman returned without a single feather. “The wind has blown them all away,” she said. “My good woman,” said the vicar, “so it is with gossip. Unkind words are easily dropped, but we can never take them back again.”

The basic problem facing our world is not just social inequity, or lack of education, or even physical hunger. We are finding that highly educated and well-fed people have greeds, hates, passions, and lusts that are not eliminated by education. The root of sin in each of our hearts is extremely deep, and this is the basic cause of the world’s problems; only the fire of the Lord can burn it out. This is precisely what Christ came to do. He didn’t come to treat symptoms. He came to get at the very heart of man’s disease.

A line of human thought that seems right to many people is the idea of self-redemption. Man thinks he must work at righteousness to save himself. After all, it was man who sinned and as we say, “God helps those who help themselves.” But a greater truth than this emerges from the Bible – the truth that God helps those who cannot help themselves. We cannot save ourselves. It is noble to be upright if we can. It is admirable to be honest, kind, and compassionate. It would seem that these characteristics would be sufficient to save our souls. But the Bible says that though this way seems right, it is wrong.

And “He loved to the end” (John 13:1), telling His disciples, “I am among you as the one who serves” (Luke 22:27). Faith pleases God more than anything else. The Christian life is dependent upon faith. We stand on faith; we live on faith. Faith is loved and honored by God more than any other single thing. The Bible teaches that faith is the only approach that we have to God. No man has sins forgiven, no man goes to heaven, no man has assurance of peace and happiness, until he has faith in Jesus Christ. You may be saying, “God, I believe you are a great person, but I do not believe your Word; I do not believe what you say.” In order to please God, you must believe Him. Perhaps your faith is small and weak. It does not matter how big your faith is, but rather, where your faith is. Is it in Christ, the Son of God, who died on the cross for your sins?
Billy Graham

In today’s world, God needs you to be willing to speak up for Him. He might send you to the boardroom to speak to people who are only concerned about the bottom line and tell them,“What does it profit a man if he gains the whole world and loses his own soul?” He might send you to your living room to declare that your family needs to be a household of faith. He might send you to the hallways of your high school to unashamedly tell your friends that you are a child of the living God. Whatever God wants you to do, have the courage to leave a mark.

If you despair of a do-over, just look at the parade of people that Jesus granted new beginnings.

A blustering, impulsive fisherman named Peter became a rock of the early church. From Christ-denying coward into a conqueror who was crucified upside down because of his radical faith!

John had such a hot temper that he was nicknamed “son of thunder,” but Jesus transformed him into an apostle of love. From the cross, he commissioned John to care for His own mother for the rest of her life.

Jesus transformed a Christian-killing, intellectual monster named Paul into a great evangelist and father of the New Testament Church.

Just think of what God can do for you!

This year as we observe our season of thanksgiving, let us be grateful not only in word but also in deed. Let our gratitude find expression in a resolve to live a life more unselfish and more consecrated to Jesus Christ. When we sit around our tables laden with sumptuous delicacies, let us not forget that half the world will go to bed hungry. As we enjoy the comforts of our cozy homes, let us not forget that great numbers in other parts of the world have no homes to go to. When we step into our sleek automobiles, let us  not forget that most of the people in the world cannot afford even a bicycle. In the Lord’s Prayer as recorded in the sixth chapter of Matthew, we read, “Give us this day our daily bread.” Scripture teaches that the good things of this life are the gifts of God, and that He is the donor of all our blessings. Thanksgiving? Yes. Let us get on our knees humbly and thank God for the blessings He has given us, both material and spiritual. They have come from His hands.

As believers, we know God uses our troubles to accomplish His good purposes. Although they are sometimes the Lord’s means of correcting us when we stray, trials also teach us to depend on Him rather than ourselves and to trust He will supply our needs. A diet of nothing but manna must have seemed like a great trial to the Israelites wandering in the wilderness. Yet that was God’s means of humbling them and teaching that He alone was their Provider (Deut. 8:3).

Understanding these things about God, you can begin to recognize adversity as a reminder of His great love. And not only that, but difficulties are also a way to know Him more intimately—that is, you won’t ever experience God as Comforter if you’re never in need of comfort.

You don’t have to be happy to have peace in your life. One of the three unalienable rights endowed on Americans by our Creator, according to the Declaration of Independence, is the pursuit of happiness. It sounds so simple. However, the Declaration did not grant us the “guarantee” of happiness…only the right to pursue happiness. If God has granted us life and liberty, each one of us has the responsibility to pursue happiness. We are responsible for how we reach our individual happiness. Each one of us chooses a path and pursues it until we possess it. The work and effort required for the end goal is where we sometimes get derailed. It turns out that the pursuit of happiness may be one of the greatest struggles of the human condition. This pursuit of happiness is not a guarantee; it is an opportunity. Be thankful to Him, and bless His name.” Try to remember this is a privilege and not a right….you’re not coming for you; you’re coming for Him. Remember, you have been cordially invited to enter His courts. Don’t ever take worship for granted.
